<image:caption>Hmmm….what’s that dull ache on the inside of my shins? I wish it would go away. But after a few more weeks it doesn’t. Someone tells you: “its just shin splints” But you are still left confused: What is it? Can you train through it? Can you recover...and prevent this injury from rearing its ugly head again?</image:caption>

<image:title>Articles & Insights - How to Fix Shin Splints - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>Your team of muscles is a bit different than we see on the soccer field, but still each muscle on the “foot team” has an important role to ensure things are stable and controlled each and every step. You have 29 muscles on Team Foot. Of those, 19 muscles start and end INSIDE the foot (called intrinsic muscles) and 10 others that start in the shin bone but still insert and thus affect the control of your foot (called extrinsic muscles). Any winning team ensures that all the players show up and do their job to earn success. Your foot is the same way – when those intrinsic muscles (again the ones inside your feet) show up ready to play, they do an incredible job of steering and stabilizing the twist in your foot every step. This means that the muscles up in the shin can “help” but aren’t overloaded.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/68bf5f4565726b7825dae0f3/b6a13068-5b5d-4f3b-b21c-6bc51897a46b/post%2Btib%2Bslide%2B2.jpg.webp</image:loc>
<image:title>Articles & Insights - How to Fix Shin Splints - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>But sometimes the team dynamics break down. In short, when the muscle inside Team Foot don’t do their job, the muscles outside Team Foot have to work harder. And that pain on the inside of your shin is caused by the muscles on the inside of your shin being asked to do WAY more than their fair share of the work. If this happens once, no biggie. But if this happens over and over again, those muscles….and the tendons and bone they connect to become overloaded and can create quite the downward spiral.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Use OVERload. Sure we’ll start with the resistance band your MOBO comes with. And that will be enough load to start. But at some point, you’ll need to start using a powerband in the 40, 80, or even 120 lbs load rating. Just like we add load onto the bar for squats, we progressively add load to the banded tippy twist. My athlete is crushing it with a 120 lb resistance band in the photo.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Let’s say you are going rock climbing, and your friend asks you for a belay. Would you grab a climbing rope that looks like the top one? or the bottom one? Assuming you like your friend, you’d likely chose the “best” rope. I think its pretty obvious that looks matter. The one that LOOKS weaker really is weaker! You’d obviously pick the more intact rope to ensure your friend is safe. This is actually the same story with tendons!</image:caption>
</image:image>

<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/68bf5f4565726b7825dae0f3/70cf56b3-0fd5-4d4e-931b-570c37e2efe7/BB536EAA-F3C7-4C05-8EF1-4A4ADC439060.PNG</image:loc>
<image:title>Articles & Insights - Why Does My Achilles Hurt?: Part 2 - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>Here’s a drawn cross section of a tendon. Let’s narrow in on the Left vs Right. On the LEFT of this pic, we see a very solid, intact, repeatable structure. The tenocytes (the cells of the tendon) are aligned well, and anchored as they should be within the structure of the tendon. Thus if you yank on them (remember, tendons are big rubber bands that stretch and recoil) they can tolerate those loads well. Yea! But on the RIGHT, things look a little different. If we could use one word, we’d say they are "disorganized”. The structure anchoring the cells together isn’t intact. The cells aren’t set up to tolerate that the incredibly high loads they’ll be given. So you keep doing your thing, which keeps loading the tendon, but the structure of the tendon has degraded to the point where its a losing battle. OUCH! If it looks good, it can tolerate high load and high volume. If it looks bad, it can’t tolerate those type of loads. Let this visual sink in!</image:caption>

<image:caption>There’s a chemical in your bones, muscles, and most other tissues in your body called “Substance P”. Not P-Ditty, Not Puff Daddy, Just Substance P. When you damage bone or muscle, Substance P gets called to action - it waves the white flag of surrender and says “Help! we are broken, and need to fix things over here”. It starts a healing process called the Inflammatory Cascade. The troops (other repair cells) are called in to repair the damage. And that’s a good thing!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Build the foundation. I’ll say it again - master the Foot 6-Pack series. Aim for 8-15 min most days. week. These will not load your achilles much, so you can do them even if your achilles is angrier than most. But they will build your feet! Get that achilles moving! The MOBO Calf Raise is GREAT option. The cut out in the board cues you to stabilize the foot correctly as you move up and down. This means you can get your achilles moving without making anything else angry. Fins go in forward slots - board will be tilted statically like a slant board. Using the rules we discussed above, work up to 25 reps, and adding weight when appropriate. Keep movement SLOW (4-6 seconds each rep).</image:caption>

<image:caption>Tendons are big rubber bands that connect your muscles to your bones. As you can see from this picture, they are continuous with your muscle. Calf muscle fibers transition into these elastic fibers that make up your achilles tendon. You create active tension in your muscles (you actively contract and shorten muscles) and your tendons store energy as they get stretched and release that energy as they recoil. When running, your muscles don’t actually change much in length- they actually HOLD position in a mostly isometric contraction, while the energy stored and released in your tendon actually creates most of the mechanical work to propel us along.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The FOOT ROCKS in our Foot 6-pack section of our website are the portal to help you build control of this motion. You step on, and rock back and forth using both the EVEN fin slots, and the ODD fin slots. Its a staple. It demands you balance not just from wobbling around in space, but building a specific strategy within your foot. .</image:caption>

<image:title>Articles & Insights - Why You Don’t Overpronate</image:title>
<image:caption>Is that too hard? Everyone is at different places in life, and some of you may find the foot rocks too demanding. If so, we can regress them to ensure you nail the basics! For this, all you need to do is use your arms to reduce the whole body balance instability, and help you focus on your feet. We used ski poles in our POLE FOOT ROCK video, but brooms or a wall work fine as well. After a handful of sessions, you’ll be able to progress and drop the contact with your hands.</image:caption>

<image:title>Articles & Insights - Why You Don’t Overpronate</image:title>
<image:caption>Do you need a little extra challenge? Once you learn control of motion, its time to LOAD IT. Our BANDED FOOT ROCK exercise will provide an extra challenge for you. Interestingly, it actually makes the balance component easier, but it will build strength through this motion better. If you are ready for these, we suggest splitting time between the regular foot rocks (no band) and the banded foot rocks to ensure you maintain balance skill on one day, and then the next session give loading it a try.</image:caption>

Any type of stability work you do has the same exact purpose over the long term. We are all time-starved but if you do your stability work FIRST, it will give you double benefit to improve your body control for long term success, and ALSO optimize performance in today’s workout.</image:caption>

As the most adaptable pro runner I’ve ever met, he’s won races across the globe at every distance from the 5K, to the Steeplechase, to Ultras. And he RIPS on skis too. <image:caption>Exercise & sport aren’t just about raising your heart rate; it’s about building skilled control within your body. The desk jockey spending 9 hours a day hunched over a laptop is still the same person with poor posture awareness running with their heart rate pegged at 185 bpm later that night. If that same person shows up without proper foot and hip control, they turn into a wobbly mess. If you train with garbage movement you practice and reinforce garbage mechanics. Blasting your heart rate won’t fix poor control. Stop the madness. Step back. Take action. Make time each week to find & FEEL better position to build skill. That way, when that heart rate hits 185, you know how you are supposed to feel and move more efficiently.</image:caption>

<image:title>Articles & Insights - Consistency: the key to successful training</image:title>
<image:caption>Tissue what? Let’s keep this simple. Every time you step, cut, leap, jump, pop, and carve you place stress on the tissues within your body. Your muscles, tendons, ligaments, bones, and soft tissues are the ones dealing with all the stress that your brain is driving. That load has to go somewhere. And yes, it’s true that exposure to stress over and over again can build up the tissues within your body and make them more resilient. But you know what works even better? TARGETED training to build better and stronger parts. If you direct specific loads to your body parts, you get specific adaptation: better, stronger, and more resilient parts! They can tolerate more load before breaking down, and then can put out more force for better performance. It’s a total win.</image:caption>

<image:caption>At the end of this month, look back at this calendar. If you only have one stability or strength logged, don’t expect much. But if you see 3+ marks on this calendar each week, there’s a good chance you don’t just feel proud of your calendar, you likely feel pretty proud of the body you’ve built too!</image:caption>
